Ayalon Route

This item was last updated in: 7/26/2009.

  • Ayalon route is used as the main traffic artery of Tel Aviv and its metropolis-area. The traffic artery consists of the Ayalon highway, railways and the Ayalon Wadi (small river).
  • Ayalon Wadi, where the gap between the two roads, flows in the winter-time, while in the summer-time it's used as a drainage channel. The river flows from east to west. Between the "South" Sportek area and slightly northwards of Hahalacha interchange, it flows between the two roads in the north-direction. Between Hahalacha and Rokach interchanges, the wadi flows out of the traffic artery, and joins with Hayarkon River in Hayarkon Park.
  • The main part of Ayalon route along Tel Aviv's city center contains four train stations, which are situated at the busiest railway strip in Israel. The stations that are spread along the strip (from south to north): "Tel Aviv Hahagana", "Tel Aviv Hashalom", "Tel Aviv Central" and "Tel Aviv University-Trade Fairs". Like those, several more stations are planned along the traffic artery.
  • Ayalon highway (road no.20) is also a junction of main highways in Israel, which join it in several points: road no.1 in the Jerusalem-direction, road no.2 in the Haifa-direction, road no.4 in the Ashdod-direction and road no.5 in the Ariel and Rosh Hayin directions.
  • The main part in Ayalon route extends between Glilot interchange at the north and Kibbutz Galuyot interchange at the south, a short distance before Kibbutz Galuyot interchange, Ayalon highway splits into two parts: in the southeast direction, where it continues as the road to Jerusalem (road no.1), and in the southwest direction as the continuance of Ayalon route through South Tel-Aviv, Jaffa, Bat-Yam, Holon, and Rishon Letzion up to Ashdod.
  • Yet in the early 60's, the Italian architect Luigi Piccinato, who was invited to Tel Aviv, clarified that there is a necessity to outline a traffic artery eastwards of Namir way which substitutes Eben Gvirol st. and Namir way. This proposal was practically brought at the 50's. In 1964, the proposal was recognized by the government and was promoted as the result of this. In 1967, an examination of financial advisability was made. In 1970, "Ayalon Highways" company was established, several years later, road no.1 was connected to the outline of Ayalon highway, so that at the coming years, the highways (road no.1 and Ayalon highway) will be joined by a continuous extension. The works during that time were around the river, and mainly included the evacuation of a wide outline for the construction of the traffic artery and the ordering of Ayalon River inside a drain. Afterwards, the paving of the road's first part, between Hahalacha interchange in the north and Hashalom interchange in the south, was started. This part of the road was opened for traffic in 1982.
  • "Ayalon Highways" company was established in order to implement the plan of the traffic artery along Ayalon wadi. Except Ayalon route, the company is additionally in charge of urban traffic arteries and many infrastructure projects. The company is both municipal and governmental corporation.
  • During the years, several parts of the road were expanded from 2 lanes to 3 and 4 lanes. The main part includes 4 lanes for each direction, along its total length.
  • Other segments of the road in its northern part will be opened in the future, furthermore, it's planned to reach road no.531. In addition, a proposal to continue the road to the city of Hadera was brought and caused a strong objection by environmental organizations. In the future, a continuous driving from the beach-highway (2) to Ayalon highway (20) and the opposite will be possible by two ramps, which one of them is under construction since 2005. The passing between the roads will be possible without traffic light.
  • The railways along the part of Ayalon route, which passes through South Tel-Aviv, Jaffa, Bat-Yam, Holon and Rishon Lezion (The part that splits from the main part in the southwest direction) will be continued to the western part of Rishon Lezion and will include several suburban train stations (Holon Junction, Wolfson, Yoseftal, Komemiyot, Moshe Dayan, Michlalot and West Rishon-Lezion). The works are currently under way and are planned to be completed in 2008.
  • Works for the construction of a third railway are currently under way at the main part of Ayalon route. (see "The addition of a third railway in Ayalon route project").
  • There is another plan of constructing an additional fourth railway in the main part of Ayalon route. (see "The addition of a fourth railway in Ayalon route project"). The long term plan was yet to be finalized and it was yet to be decided how will a strip be evacuated for the new railway. According to a proposal that was brought, Ayalon River will be shifted out of the traffic artery, so it will flow by pipes into the sea. According to another proposal, the river's water will be drained in an artificially made lake at the future Ayalon park, or nearby.
  • A new traffic artery called "Ayalon East" is planned to connect the current Ayalon highway with road no.5 by Hatikva interchange, and may also connect road no.6 at the next phase. The road will come from the east, will be perpendicular to Ayalon route and will connect it in the area of Rokach interchange. (see "East Ayalon route" project)
